Yet Another Travel Blog
I find myself torn between a love for travel - for the discovery, the lessons, the experience (and getting away from winter) - and wanting to be conscientious about the impact it has on the people, wildlife, and environments visited. When traveling, I do my best to read up on where I am headed to find out about the culture, history, political climate, environment and economy. It's not always easy to tell whether the wildlife sanctuary is beneficial or cruel; whether the registered tour guide was offered any training on the impact of large groups in fragile systems. It's hard to consider all the little ways in which we can harm some quickly disappearing habitats. Generally speaking, if something feels off, it's probably best to avoid it.
We did our best to avoid flights when we could take ground transportation, to avoid blatant exploitation of lives for profit. It can take a bit of digging to discover what goes on behind the scenes, and no one yet understands the complexity of the impacts our lifestyles has on a global system. I cherish the friends and memories I've made around the world, but we will not be globetrotting again anytime soon.
